Summary: Urine Culture
Introduction:
The urine culture test detects and identifies bacteria and yeast in the urine to diagnose urinary tract infections (UTIs). Urine, produced by the kidneys, is generally sterile. Bacteria or yeast entering the urinary tract can cause infections. The test involves placing a urine sample on agar plates for bacterial and yeast growth, followed by incubation. The colonies formed help identify the microorganisms, their quantity and their types.
Test Sample:
Mid-stream clean catch urine sample or urine obtained via catheter.
