A blood smear is a drop of blood spread thinly onto a glass slide, stained, and examined under a microscope. It allows for the evaluation of red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), and platelets. Abnormalities in their appearance and number can indicate various diseases and conditions affecting blood cell production, function, and destruction.
A blood sample is obtained by inserting a needle into a vein in the arm or by pricking a finger, ear, or heel.
