A blood sample taken from a vein in the arm.
Fasting is preferred but not required for this test.
Alkaline phosphatase is an enzyme found in high levels in bone and liver, with smaller amounts in the placenta of pregnant women and the intestines. Different forms of ALP, called isoenzymes, are produced by these body parts.
A blood sample is taken by needle from a vein in the arm.
Fasting is preferred but not required. Ideally, the test should be done after fasting overnight, with only water permitted.
When a person shows evidence of liver disease, elevated ALP levels can indicate partially or totally blocked or inflamed bile ducts. Very high ALP levels can be seen in people with cancer that has spread to the liver or bones. ALP levels are monitored to assess the response to treatment in individuals with bone or liver cancer.
ALP is usually part of liver function tests, requested when a patient has symptoms of a liver or bone disorder.
