To help diagnose and monitor therapy for certain cancers of the liver, testes or ovaries.
When your doctor suspects that you have certain cancers of the liver, testes or ovaries; at intervals during and after treatment for one of these cancers; sometimes when you have chronic hepatitis or cirrhosis.
A blood sample drawn from a vein in the arm.
None.
This test measures alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) in the blood, a protein primarily produced by fetal liver and yolk sac tissues. AFP concentrations are typically elevated at birth, declining rapidly afterward. Increased AFP levels indicate liver damage, regeneration and can be significantly elevated by certain tumors. AFP is used as a tumor marker for liver, testes and ovarian cancers. AFP exists in several variants, with the AFP-L3% test measuring a specific variant associated with increased cancer risk.
A blood sample is taken by needle from a vein in the arm.
No test preparation is needed.
AFP is used as a tumor marker to help detect and diagnose cancers of the liver, testes and ovaries. It is also ordered periodically to monitor response to therapy and cancer recurrence. AFP-L3% test, less commonly used in the U.S., evaluates the risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma and monitors treatment effectiveness.
