To help diagnose myasthenia gravis (MG) and distinguish it from other conditions with similar symptoms; sometimes to monitor MG.
When you have symptoms suggesting MG, such as drooping eyelid, double vision, difficulty chewing or swallowing and/or weakness in specific muscles.
A blood sample drawn from a vein in your arm.
None.
Acetylcholine receptor (AChR) antibodies are autoantibodies produced by the immune system that mistakenly target acetylcholine receptors on skeletal muscle fibers. This test detects and measures AChR antibodies in the blood. AChR antibodies interfere with acetylcholine receptors’ function, causing muscle weakness, fatigue and myasthenia gravis.
A blood sample is obtained by inserting a needle into a vein in the arm.
No test preparation is needed.
The AChR antibody test helps diagnose myasthenia gravis (MG) and distinguish it from other conditions. AChR antibodies hinder acetylcholine receptors, affecting muscle control. The test measures “binding” antibodies, the most commonly performed method.
